The Cuomo Foundation is funding an agricultural project in Lompoul, in northwestern Senegal, that aims to revitalise a neglected farm by implementing sustainable and climate-resilient farming methods.

This latest project will involve renovating existing buildings and establishing infrastructure to combine innovation with environmental stewardship and local resource management. The emphasis will be on implementing sustainable agriculture to grow fruits, vegetables, cereals, and produce meat, and milk. These products will initially serve local markets, but with plans to obtain quality and traceability certification to expand into national and international markets.

Beyond its economic goals, the project will focus on social outcomes such as job creation, improved food security, and the promotion of farming techniques that maintain ecological balance, all of which should benefit the local community.

The farm is in a difficult environment characterised by arid conditions and limited vegetation, which is typical of a desert landscape with sandy soil. An initial site visit has already been completed to assess current conditions and the challenges.

The Cuomo Foundation will provide both financial and technical support for the project. The funding enables the project's launch, with the expectation that it will eventually become financially self-sustaining. Dr. Siméon Diedhiou, an agricultural sciences researcher who has been funded by the Cuomo Foundation since 2023, when he was chosen as a recipient of the IPCC scholarship program, will provide the technical assistance. Dr. Diedhiou will be voluntarily offering his expertise to the project's implementation and management.

This comprehensive approach reflects the Cuomo Foundation's continuing commitment to fostering collaborations that promote sustainable development and environmentally conscious practices in the regions where it operates.
