Cuomo Foundation Initiates Emergency Response Efforts in Tamil Nadu After Cyclone Hits

The Cuomo Foundation has taken action to provide crucial assistance in response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal, which struck Tamil Nadu in southern India with great force from 24th – 30th of November.

This extreme weather event, increased by the effects of global climate change, forced countless families to flee their homes, leaving them without shelter, food, or the necessities. Numerous individuals sought refuge in the local churches and schools, depending on the community support for survival.

The Cuomo Foundation is supporting its 25-year operating partner in this region, the Diocese of Chingleput, throughout this challenging time. The places most affected by the cyclone, such as Kadapakkam, Cheyyur, North Cheyyur, Pavunjur, Pathur, Koothavakkam, Mamallapuram, Thatchoor, Sengattur, and Muttukadu, are the focus of the Cuomo Foundation funded relief operations.

Essential supplies including food, bedding, and blankets are being distributed as part of the emergency response program.

Helping vulnerable families—and the elderly—rebuild their lives during this challenging period is the aim of these efforts.

Action on Climate Change

This initiative is consistent with the Cuomo Foundation's continued commitment to tackling the increasing challenges caused by climate change. The Foundation actively works with international partners, such as the IPCC, to promote long-term, sustainable solutions in addition to responding to disaster events. Through these projects, which focus on research and climate action, the Foundation seeks to enhance understanding of the impacts of extreme weather events, foresee their consequences, and strengthen the resilience of the most at-risk communities.
